More black and white stills for Zhang Yimou’s period wuxia film Shadow

Shadow is all about opposites – light and dark, yin and yang – and I’m hoping the future teasers will be as stylish as the posters. Deng Chao (The Liquidator) will be playing two characters, and Sun Li (Nothing Gold Can Stay) costars as his wife.

New visually stunning trailer for Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy

I’ve been trying to keep my expectations low for Tribes and Empires, but the release of another fantastic trailer isn’t helping.

Huang Xuan (Extraordinary Mission) stars the half-human half-spirit prince Muyun Sheng, Shawn Dou (The Last Race) is the abandoned son of a loyal general and Zhou Yiwei (The Insanity) plays the heir of one of the nomadic tribes. Their love interests are played by Janice Man, Xu Lu and Zhang Jianing respectively.

Storm of Prophecy plays up the romance in couple posters

Readers, what are your opinions on these posters?

Despite the lacklustre character stills, I think Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy has still got it – I love the traditional look of these new posters, which feature all the romantic pairings in the drama.

The 80 episode fantasy drama is helmed by cinematographer turned director Cao Dun, and is aiming to broadcast on Hunan TV at the beginning of 2017. New stills, posters and character descriptions below the cut.

Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy unleashes female character posters

I feel like there’s more variety in the female costumes here than the male ones

Tribes and Empires:  Storm of Prophecy 九州·海上牧云记 has released character posters for the female cast.  Starring Shawn Dou, Huang Xuan, Zhou Yiwei, Janice Man, Wan Qian, Xu Lu, Zhang Jianing,  Jiang Qinqin, and Wang Qianyuan, at least these costumes seem to show more color than the male ones…

Storm of Prophecy stills not nearly as impressive as trailer

The trailer was amazing… but after watching it a few times, I kind of miss colors outside of yellow, white, black, and red… They seem to be really strict with the color control here.

More stills for Tribes and Empires:  Storm of Prophecy 九州·海上牧云记.  Starring Huang Xuan, Shawn Dou, Zhou Yiwei,  Janice Man, Wan Qian, Xu Lu, Zhang Jianing,  Jiang Qinqin, and Wang Qianyuan, I like how the costumes are different without hitting the point of being ridiculous.

Male period costuming… getting just as possibly ridiculous if not more so than the female counterpart…

Tribes and Empires:  Storm of Prophecy 九州·海上牧云记 has released character posters for the male cast.  Starring Shawn Dou, Huang Xuan, Zhou Yiwei,, and Wang Qianyuan, I have to say I am not exactly impressed nor am I exactly disappointed either…

Storm of Prophecy continues to rule with new trailer

My most anticipated drama of the year, Empires and Tribes: Storm of Prophecy 九州·海上牧云记, released its second trailer today.  The cinematography is still jaw-dropping, and the longer trailer gives us a glimpse at the cast.  I’m especially impressed by the performance of antagonists Wang Qianyuan and Wan Qian.

Also, I finally finished the book and wrote an actual synopsis for the story! Continue reading

Storm of Prophecy sets new bar for Chinese TV

This is the highest level of TV production in China so far.  The cinematography is stunning, the set intricate, and the editing indicates a wonderful control of pace.  I think I’m in love.

Tribes and Empires:  Storm of Prophecy 九州·海上牧云记 blew me away in the opening scene of the trailer alone.  I hope this sets a new bar for Chinese TV, and I have high hopes for future adaptations of the Tribes and Empires series.   I actually cried thinking about how this could be the future of Chinese TV.

The series is directed by Cao Dun and stars Huang Xuan, Shawn Dou, Zhou Yiwei, Xu Lu, Wen Yongshan, Zhang Jianing, Wan Qian, Kan Qingzi, Peng Guanying, Yu Haoming, Wang Qianyuan, Reyizha,  Jiang Qinqin, Zhang Junning (Janine Chang), Li Xin’ai, and Li Nian . No news on airing date yet. This is the first of three upcoming series set in Novoland, all by different authors and companies.
