Over 40 celebs join in Vogue Film photoshoot

Three generations of Chinese actresses.

It’s rare to get this many stars to do anything together, not to mention a photoshoot where everyone’s agent is probably fighting for a better spot, but Vogue Film has done it in conjunction with its gala this year. The photoshoots includes  some of the biggest actors, including Li Bingbing, Yang Mi, Angelababy, Liu Shishi, Tong Liya, Xin Zhilei, Tan Zhuo, Huang Xuan, Ethan Ruan, Zhou Yiwei, Zhai Tianlin, Han Dongjun, Xu Weizhou, Peng Yuchang, Bai Baihe, Jing Boran, William Chan, Ma Sichun, Janine Chang, Sun Yi, Li Meng, Qi Xi, Lan Yingying, Chen Ran, Victoria Song, Ouyang Nana, Wu Lei, Chen Feiyu, Song Zuer, Yang Le, Geng Le, Li Chun, Zhang Xueying, Zhang Zifeng, and Chen Wenqi. Musicians Zhang Bichen, Li Yundi, Zhou Bichang and models Ju Xiaowen, Xi Mengyao, Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying (Bad Genius is amazing and I highly recommend it) , and Karlie Kloss also joined in the fun.

I was able to recognized 34 of the 42 without looking at the list of names, how many can you identify?

Photoshoot Round-up: Photographer Luo Yang

Photographer Luo Yang is one of the fastest-rising fashion photographers in the past year, a year with a lot of diverse, young photographers hitting the scene. Her photoshoot with Chun Xia was voted the best fashion magazine cover of year by fans and a panel of professionals, and imo it’s well-deserved.  Here are some of her works, including with Ma Sichun, Jiang WenliXiao Wen Ju, Zhong Chuxi, Chun Xia, Chen Feiyu, Li Meng, and Jing Tian.

The rawness captured in her photoshoots bring an unique perspective to the fashion magazine photography scene. I also love how her photoshoots subtly shows  Chinese influences without making it in-your-face.  It’s a part of what I see as a growing movement by Chinese artists to move away from the bold, explicit cultural elements like in the works of Chen Man. Another recent example is the embroidery Beauty Portraits by Leslie Zhang and Liu Zongyuan.

Promo Round-up: Oh My General

Oh My General is the latest drama from Lv Haojiji (Go Princess Go!), and stars Ma Sichun (Soul Mate) as a badass female general of the Song dynasty, who is ordered to marry an immature and frivolous prince, played by Sheng Yilun (Pretty Li Huizhen).

This is Ma Sichun’s first project since her win at the Golden Horse Awards, so I’ll be curious to see if she can still bring out her best without the guidance of an experienced director like Peter Chan. The 60 episode drama will air weekly on Youku beginning tonight.

Oh, My General trailer is a cute take on male military spouses

The costumes still look super Japanese (they got a Japanese costume designer) for the Song dynasty, but everything else for Oh My General is on point.

A genderswap take on the common tale of the tough general who finds his soft spot for the sweet girl at home  who learns from him and shares his burden, Oh, My General 将军在上 actually looks both funny and sweet in its first trailer. Newly Crowned Golden Horse Best Actress Ma Sichun (Soul Mate) looks great for her first ancient lead role, and her partner Sheng Yilun (Go Princess Go) looks pretty enough for his.
