The Legend of Chusen 青云志 has released more stills.  Starring Li Yifeng, Zhao Liying, Qin Junjie, Cheng Yi, Tang Yixin, Zhang Luyi, Wei Wei, Che Xiao, Xiong Naijin, Yiyang Qianxi, Wang Yuan, Wang Junkai, and Yang Zi, those enjoying the costumes and backgrounds can get a better look through this post.

Li Yifeng goes emo in The Legend of Chusen trailer

If ancient China had an equivalent of Hot Topic, I imagine they would sell clothes like this…

The Legend of Chusen 青云志, what we previously called Noble Aspirations,  has released even more stills and a trailer.  Starring Li Yifeng, Zhao Liying, Qin Junjie, Tang Yixin, and Yang Zi, after seeing some of the backgrounds the costumes look a bit less “mass produced” to me, especially after the trailer.  :)

Sparrow releases heart-wrecking MV

Those trees and flowers in the background must be really resilient to the cold.

I can’t tell if Sparrow  is actually epic or if it’s just the BGM (last heard breaking my heart here). Still do not see a sliver of life in Li Yifeng’s eyes (he’s also the only one being dubbed),  but everyone else is beautiful even while crying, and I’m impressed by a couple of the shots.  Also, I can’t wait for  Kan Qingzi to get lead roles.

Apparently, clothes cleaning was a necessary prerequisite to join any of these groups so you can go on dangerous missions and still look immaculate…

Noble Aspirations 青云志 has released stills with backgrounds.  Stills of Yang Zi, Li Yifeng, and Yiyang Qianxi below. I know some of the costumes were starting to look a bit tacky but I feel like the backgrounds so far are working nicely…

Li Yifeng, Zhou Dongyu star in espionage series

Screen Shot 2016-05-03 at 11.39.13 PM

Even built-in English subs can’t make-up for a dubbed Zhang Luyi.

Set in the same time and place as last year’s hit The Disguiser, espionage series Sparrow 麻雀 released its first trailer today. This is both Li Yifeng and Zhou Dongyu’s first foray into the genre, and I have to say that Zhou Dongyu impresses a lot more than her co-star. Despite her babyface, she’s able to smile like an angel but cry with the pains of experience.  And of course, veterans Wang Jinsong,  Zhang Luyi and Li Xiaoran always bring their A-game.  The series co-stars Zhang Ruoyun, Kan Qingzi, and Yin Zheng.

So… I guess it’s fashionable this year for the male leads of fantasy dramas to dress like somebody died…

Noble Aspirations 青云志 has released more stills… what else is new.  Starring Li YifengZhao Liying, Qin Junjie, Cheng YiTang Yixin, Zhang Luyi, Wei WeiChe XiaoXiong NaijinYiyang Qianxi, Wang YuanWang Junkai, and Yang Zi,at least it seems like they are starting to move away from simple character stills… and this week, featuring what looks like a yellow-orange hanfu-poncho…

Li Yifeng congratules Leonardo DiCaprio on Oscar win

李易峰: 恭喜

It’s Weibo Wednesday time! I didn’t pay much attention to this year’s Academy Awards, which took place on February 28, but it looks like quite a few Chinese celebs did. Here we have Li Yifeng congratulating Leonardo DiCaprio for finally winning a Best Actor award. In case you’re wondering what is going on, he’s spoofing a scene in The Revenant where Leo gets attacked by a bear.

In other Hollywood news, Li Yifeng was picked as an ambassador for the superhero movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which drops in the U.S. and in mainland China on March 25. However, I’m not entirely clear on what his being an ambassador entails. Yifeng also has two TV series — espionage drama Sparrow (麻雀) and xianxia drama Noble Aspirations (青云志) — expected to be released this year.

I spy … a lot of spies in 2016

To get an idea of the extent of communist infiltration at the time, the head of the KMT’s central intelligence agency was at one time a communist mole. The character whom Ming Lou was modeled after in The Disguiser? A five-sided agent.

As idol actors try to prove their worth, many of them are looking toward espionage dramas.   Li Yifeng, Zhao Liying,  Liu Shishi, Hawick Lau, Zhou DongyuZhang RuoyunChen Xuedong,  Lu Yi, Qiao Zhenyu,  and Ady An Yixuan are just some of the latest spies in the drama world.

Espionage dramas have long been turning points for many actors, most recently Jin Dong and Wang Kai in The Disguiser.   While usually more reserved for veteran actors, the specialty is now in vogue for the young and beautiful.   Set mostly during the Sino-Japanese war, a period is known for their classy outfits and intrigue-filled politics,  espionage dramas are perfect for multi-layered characters and acting if one can handle it.

A round-up of some upcoming espionage dramas, in historical chronological order.  Which ones are you looking forward to the most? Continue reading
