For Zhou Xun’s sake, I hope this drama will live up to expectations.

Historical romance drama Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace 后宫·如懿传, also known as the sequel to Empresses in the PalaceLegend of Zhenhuan 后宫·甄嬛传, has finally released the full supporting cast list.

I have translated the plot, character descriptions and ranks below. All the information I have gathered is based on the original novel. A word of warning that some of the characters’ endings are also included, so do proceed with caution.

Princess Agents continues with decent production and costumes

I’m just here for the pretty production… not for the name that still makes me shudder…

Princess Agents 特工皇妃楚乔传 has released even more stills.  Starring Zhao LiyingLin GengxinDou XiaoDeng LunLi QinKan Qingzi, and Niu Junfeng, not exactly an expert on the costuming of this time period but at least some of the costumes seem to mimic some of the images I have seen in the past for this era with more modern styling as opposed to a “generic hanfu” look (1, 2, 3, 4).

Li Qin, Lin Shen fight drugs again in Undercover

Not Li Shen and Li Qin.

Not Li Shen and Li Qin.

Last seen battling the illegal drug trade in Hua Kai Ban Xia 花开半夏 together, Li Qin and Lin Shen team up again in Undercover 卧底归来. Lin Shen plays an undercover cop set to infiltrate a drug cartel. He gains the cartel’s trust and becomes the bodyguard of its leader’s daughter (Li Qin).  They are joined by Zhang Jiayi, Liu Yijun, Fu Jing (the very model of perfection in her role in Educated Youth), and Zhai Tianlin.

Zhao Liying, Lin Gengxin star in Princess Agents

I was hoping the stylists would give Lin Gengxin a traditional topknot, because he just looks like Zhao Zilong lite here…

Princess Agents has released first stills of the leads just a month and a half into filming, and features Zhao Liying as Chu Qiao, Lin Gengxin as Yuwen Yue, Shawn Dou as Yan Xun and Li Qin as Yuan Chun. I recall being swept up in the high-stakes and torturous story of the original novel, though after a string of disappointing adaptions, I’ve learned to go into these types of dramas with zero expectations.

My Amazing Bride Releases Trailers

For a romantic comedy with such bright colors, this drama plot implies something a little darker.

We’re used to the serious, dark, cunning, and evil side of period dramas but every now and again, something different is nice.  Enter My Amazing Bride.  My Amazing Bride is set in the Ming dynasty and stars Li Qin, Jin Shijia, Gao Yang, Maggie Shiu, Howie Huang, Kingdom Yuen, Vence Soong, Zheng Peipei, Xiong Naijin, and Chen Zihan in this comedic take on the typical story arcs every period drama requires.

The drama describes the “tofu Xi Shi” Tang Doudou (Li Qin), who is on the way to becoming a spinster. This is because she refuses to marry unless she meets a first-class gentlemen, who understands her and who she loves (therefore worthy of her true affections). After a misstep with the officials, the Tang clan faces its demise, but fortunately, the Zhuang family*  reaches out to help. Madame Zhuang wants Doudou to marry her oldest son, who has long been both good-looking, well-principled, and cultured genius – yet on the day of the wedding, he turns into an idiot with the intelligence level of an eight year old! Doudou is furious, and runs home, but without money to pay for her father’s illness, she must meet up with Madame Zhuang again. Her oldest son is still lovesick for Doudou, and his mother works out a one-year agreement with Doudou. But wait, Dou Dou discovers something very unusual about her husband’s illness, something a little out of place in the family, and seeks to find the truth – yet her mother-in-law is strangely unperturbed…?

*Pun: The “Village” of the Zhuangs is Zhuang Zhuang. More trailers and stills below the cut.
