Jing Boran Replaces Kai Ko in Live-Action-Animated Film “Monster Hunt”

Looks like Jing Boran is becoming the new go-to young actor.

Due to Kai Ko‘s arrest for drug use in August of last year, all of his upcoming film projects have been banned in China for the time being, with Tiny Times 4.0 (小时代4) and Monster Hunt (捉妖记) bearing the brunt of the damage, since they had already wrapped up filming. Recently, it was announced that Monster Hunt would be refilmed, with Jing Boran taking Kai’s place as the male lead.

Monster Hunt is a live-action/animated film that tells the story of Wuba, a demon monster accidentally conceived by Tian Yin (Jing Boran). Wuba is brought to earth under the protection of Huo Xiaolan (Bai Baihe), an expert at subduing unruly monsters. When she develops affection for Wuba, Xiaolan struggles to complete her ultimate motive — to sell the little monster to the highest bidder.

Jing Boran was selected as Kai’s replacement because the two are of similar height and age, according to production company Edko Films. Moreover, he was the only suitable candidate who had an opening in his work schedule.

Refilming is expected to take 1.5 months. Cast members who filmed scenes alongside Kai will also be required to return and redo their shoots — an expensive process for everyone involved, since they are more or less shooting the movie twice. If this move proves successful, however, Monster Hunt is slated to become a trilogy. Check out a trailer here.

Photoshoot Friday: August 29, 2014

Yao Chen makes me think that cloudy beaches might be more perfect than sunny ones – but then, Li Xuedong turns up a heat not long afterwards, revealing that the 17th prince has a pretty nice set of abs. Meanwhile, Minna Yang (Huang Rong for the upcoming ROCH 2014) goes for our favorite newspaper look ( “black, white, and red all over”). Gillian Chung looks much more sophisticated than she does in Ancient Sword in her photo shoot here, while “her” pet kitten Zhang Yunlong (from the same drama) is quite manly, even in a butterfly covered blouse. Also, Kai Ko plays basketball with a baseball cap on in his photo shoot for Elle Men (probably the last for a while).  Continue reading

Weibo Wednesday: July 2, 2014

To be honest, not much has been happening on the Weibo front since our last round-up (that, or I haven’t had the time to pay enough attention), but have some cuteness to make up for the lack of real news.

Zhou Xun with boyfriend Archie Kao and panda

i周迅: [panda emoticon]

Zhou Xun with her Chinese-American boyfriend Archie Kao is quite adorable already, but give me Zhou Xun, Archie, and a panda, and that’s even better! I’m going to have to throw in an extra picture here, because she is really just too cute.

Fan Bingbing is still China’s biggest star

Fan Bingbing tops the Forbes China Celebrity List for the second year in a row, which means I get to reuse the same photo as last year.

Riding on her foray into Hollywood, actress Fan Bingbing has retained her top-ranking position on the Forbes China Celebrity List. The list, which ranks the top 100 Chinese celebrities based on media exposure and income, sees more Mainland stars this year than ever before, with 60 (or so) of the listees basing their careers in Mainland China. Aside from a handful of actors, however, the biggest A-listers were overwhelming from Hong Kong or Taiwan, with 14 of the top 20 hailing from either of the two islands.

According to Forbes, Fan raked in nearly $20 million last year, putting her on par with Jennifer Aniston and Kanye West. The celebrity with the deepest pockets, Jay Chou, banked $25 million, around the same as Ben Affleck or Buffy creator and Avengers director Joss Whedon.
Despite the success of China’s biggest stars (this year’s top 10 took home $20 million more than last year’s), the overall earnings of the Celebrity 100 decreased for a second consecutive year, accumulating $65 million less wealth than the year before. However, the celebrities still managed to bring home more than half a billion dollars between them.

Actors and actresses made up the bulk of the list, accounting for 72 of the celebrities. It is common for celebrities to both sing and act in the Chinese entertainment industry, however, and several were identified as both.
Of the 29 singers and musical groups on the list, only six were from Mainland China. Of those six, five were involved in reality television singing competitions, with the exception of Hong Kong-launched Faye Wong.
Mainland Pianists Lang Lang and Li Yundi maintained their presence on the list, with Li (ranked 56) overtaking Lang Lang (57) for the first time.

New entrants to the list include Tiny Times author Guo Jingming who debuted at 27, model Zhang Liang of Where Are We Going, Dad? fame, and I Am A Singer runner-up G.E.M and Taiwanese actor Kai Ko just sneaking onto the list at 91 and 97 respectively.

Meanwhile, notable dropouts include Taiwanese film director Ang Lee (previously ranked 29), Hong Kong funnyman Stephen Chow (24), Jet Li (41), Nobel laureate Mo Yan (16), Olympic gold medalist Sun Yang (31), former Super Junior member Han Geng (87), and Super Girls Chris Li (15) and Jane Zhang (45).

吴奇隆TD: 長的像吳奇隆了不起啊?你再瞪我,拖出去……擺好

How many wax dummies of Nicky Wu do we need? Well, I’m not complaining, even though the dummy doesn’t even look that much like him… as long as they give us Bu Bu Jing Qing (步步惊情) when they said they would. Just twenty days away, everyone!

You think you’re great because you look like Nicky Wu? If you keep staring at me, I’ll have you dragged out and……… arranged properly.

Tiny Times 3.0 posters, make out edition!

Why have two main male leads paired with the main female leads when you can pair them with each other?

Tiny Times 3.0 shows you that movie posters don’t have to actually relate to the plot as long as there’s fanservice involved.

Why sleep alone when you can kiss someone else? Tiny Times 3.0 cast celebrates Valentine’s Day with a poster series of the main cast about to kiss.

Posters feature Yang Mi, Amber Kuo, Kai Ko, Chen Xuedong, Bea Hayden, Xie Yilin, Jiang Chao, Du Tianhao, and newcomers Vivian Dawson, Ren Youming, and Lee Hyunjae.  Note that the posters may have nothing to do with the actual plot and most of those pairings do not exist in the book.
