Guan Xiaotong, Dylan Sprouse Star in Turandot

I feel like I watched both of them grow up.

Guan Xiaotong and Dylan Sprouse (the non-Riverdale brother from The Suite Life of Zack & Cody) have begun filming the Zheng Xiaolong (Empresses in the Palace) film adaptation of opera Turandot.

Deadline has the synopsis translated, and it seems like the major change is the princess’s cruelty got blamed on a magical curse. Co-productions tend to be huge messes so I’m not having high hopes.

Described as a fantasy romance, the plot follows Princess Turandot (Xiaotong), who is cursed by a mysterious power emanating from three Mazovian bracelets that were given to her as birthday gifts. These bracelets’ life-draining effects cause the princess to becomes cruel, and gradually she loses her humanity.

Foreign princes who come to court her must solve three riddles — one for each bracelet — and only then will she be freed from the power of the bracelets. In the event any of the questions is answered incorrectly, the attempted solver would be put to death. One day, Calaf (Sprouse), an ordinary citizen, risks his life to answer the riddles to save her and inadvertently uncovers his own extraordinary past.

Barbie releases Guan Xiaotong doll

The next time people tell you Chinese people are short, you can show them this to-scale photo.

As a part of International Women’s Day, Mattel released 17 dolls of prominent (young) women around the world.  In China, volleyball player Hui Ruoqi, dancer Tan Yuanyuan (inconsistency in translation is so annoying), and  Actress Guan Xiaotong were the ones chosen.  It appears they’re not currently out for sell yet, but maybe you can buy one in the future.    I’ll probably pass on this one, but I’m so ready for all the merch  for the live-action Mulan (if it ever gets made).

More black and white stills for Zhang Yimou’s period wuxia film Shadow

Shadow is all about opposites – light and dark, yin and yang – and I’m hoping the future teasers will be as stylish as the posters. Deng Chao (The Liquidator) will be playing two characters, and Sun Li (Nothing Gold Can Stay) costars as his wife.

23rd Magnolia Awards

The turnout rate for the actors was pretty embarrassing this year – Zhang Yi was the only Best Actor nominee who attended the event, and ended up winning the award as well. His costar Yin Tao also took home Best Actress, though I’ve read great reviews about their performances in Feather Flies to the Sky, so there was no controversy surrounding the wins.
