Sinology Sunday: Tangren recreates artifacts for Three Kingdoms drama

The whimsical geometric depictions of fantastical beasts were a mark of the Chu. Considering themselves descendants  of  phoenixes rather than dragons, the Shamanistic Chu were considered “heathen”  to many at the time.

Were you impressed at how gorgeous the new Tangren outfits for its   upcoming Three Kingdoms drama.  Yours truly happen to be currently in a Chu dynasty phase and immediately recognized them as strangely anachronistic.   In fact, half of the patterns for their character posters came directly from the same tomb, the famous No. 1 Chu Tomb of Jiangling Mashan  江陵马山一号楚墓, dated about five centuries before the story’s time.

So, in honor of our beloved Tangren that seems to try each time to be slightly more historically accurate (albeit via the laziest way possible), here’s a a look at some of the patterns of Chu.

Wan Qian’s outfit (C) uses a facing Phoenix pattern from a silk robe(R). Left shows the colors of the original textile. The Chu were known for their fondness of slenderness, both in artistic style and in body shape. Rumor has it that in order to win the favor of one King of Chu, his chancellors starved so much that they couldn’t stand up by themselves.

006wFdanly1fffmvvk3d8j31kw2t4qv5

It seems like Tangren (nicknamed ‘Poor Tang/穷唐’) has been investing more money and effort into their costumes lately…

Character posters have been released for Secret of the Three Kingdoms 三国机密之潜龙在渊, the drama adaption of Ma Boyong’s novels of the same name. Starring Ma Tianyu (Beauty Private Kitchen), Han Dongjun (Chinese Paladin 5) and Wan Qian (Glory of the Tang Dynasty), it focuses on the power struggle between Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty and powerful warlord Cao Cao (Tse Kwan-ho).

For Zhou Xun’s sake, I hope this drama will live up to expectations.

I have translated the plot, character descriptions and ranks below. All the information I have gathered is based on the original novel. A word of warning that some of the characters’ endings are also included, so do proceed with caution.

Dong Jie, Han Dong star in Shandong’s latest Republican drama

Can you find the anachronistic mistake in the book?

Can you find the anachronism in this photo of Han Dong?

Hu Ge and Wallace Huo aren’t the only idol actors tapped by Shandong Film and TV Group for their entrance into the new world of popular drama.   Han Dong and Dong Jie star in the latest production from the company,  Republican-era drama  Nanking Love Story 南京爱情故事.  Dong Jie plays a singer who uses her voice to fight for the silenced city, while Han Dong plays her love out-of-arranged-marriage who appears to join the army based on the stills.

Scriptwriter Zhao Dongling has had a good track record, but Nanjing in the late 1930’s is one of the hardest and most touchy time periods to depict on the screen,  and so far there have been no successes, so we’ll see how it turns out. As for yours truly, I’ve already cried twice just in the process of writing this  post alone while thinking about the Rape of Nanking, which I’m not even sure this drama covers.

Zhao Wei is a “Tiger Mom” for her new drama with Tong Dawei

“We must fight for the sake of our daughter!””Who said it’s enough to be happy?”

I’m really hoping that Zhao Wei’s upcoming drama Tiger Mother and Kitten Father won’t take a candy-flavored “Tiger Mothers are foolish and wrong!” stance at the end, and that the plotline will be a little more (realistically) complex than a generic rom-com.
“Tiger Mother” Zhao Wei and “Kitten Father” Tong Dawei have always felt that they were very fortunate, having managed to moved to Beijing after their studies, having bought their houses before prices ballooned, having bought their car before license plates were restricted…the couple’s business seems to be doing well, and their precious daughter is adorable and clever. Everything is perfect, until their 00s generation daughter goes to elementary school…
.
They, who had attended and admired their daughter’s preschool performance not long before, are suddenly shocked to find how behind their daughter is. The Tiger Mother frantically looks for connections (“guan xi”), scrambling for insider information, a house inside a school district (in China, only some houses are guaranteed a spot in a school). The Kitten Father does his best to support his wife’s wishes.
 .
As the Kitten Father feels he understands his wife less and less, the Tiger Mother feels increasingly that her husband is being irresponsible. At this time, the Kitten Tiger’s first love, an educational expert, returns to China (Dong Jie). Her beliefs are in contrast to the “fight hard” attitude that the Kitten Father is currently living by.
 .

It’s a clan of animals: the stick-carrying, education-focused “lion” of a (maternal) grandfather, an aristocratic fox of a (paternal) grandmother, a fiercely protective (to the point of being “bull like”) sparrow of a (maternal) grandmother, a pig of a Sinology professor for a (paternal) grandfather…the list goes on. What type of upbringing would be best for the beloved granddaughter?

Stills of Zhao Wei below the cut.
