23rd Magnolia Awards

The turnout rate for the actors was pretty embarrassing this year – Zhang Yi was the only Best Actor nominee who attended the event, and ended up winning the award as well. His costar Yin Tao also took home Best Actress, though I’ve read great reviews about their performances in Feather Flies to the Sky, so there was no controversy surrounding the wins.

28th Golden Eagle Awards

zco0ur5

Please excuse me as I take a trip down memory lane…

The Golden Eagle Awards is a prestigious biannual television awards ceremony, and prides itself on being “the people’s award”. Unlike the Flying Apsaras Awards (government recognition) and Magnolia Awards (industry recognition), Golden Eagle spreads the love more evenly, and usually several dramas and actors are acknowledged.

In previous years, the Best Actor and Actress of the night were decided by online voters and a panel of judges, and presented with the Audience’s Choice award (golden statue) and Best Performing Arts award (crystal statue). This year the two awards were given to different actors, with the nominee that received the most votes from the judges winning the Performing Arts award.

22nd Magnolia Awards

Congratulations to the big winners of the night!

The Magnolia Awards is held in conjunction with the Shanghai Television Festival, home to one of East Asia’s biggest television markets. Magnolia Awards is recognised as one of the most prestigious television awards alongside the Golden Eagle and Flying Apsaras, though it cannot seem to make up its mind on the number of categories (the current format began last year).

Full list of nominees, winners and red carpet pictures are below the cut.

I bumped the list of nominations because the ceremony is today, and edited in the winners. This was a shocker because a certain film got shut out, winning none of its nominations. (Hint: it’s one of the above – both heavy favorites for the best picture award)

The whole thing was a lot more boring than last year, probably because the jury did not pick very big films, and completely had shut out Red Cliff 2 from nominations.

Although interestingly – this year was the first year purely Chinese films were allowed to compete. Before they had to be partially invested in by Taiwanese producers. And in a sign of better cross-strait relations China’s CCTV in tur broadcasted the awards.

Of the four promotional posters for this event (best director, actress, actor, newcomer), I decided to use the one for best newcomer, because Xu Jiao (CJ7) looks so adorable in the center

The eligible films are those where two of the following occur: the director is a Hong Kong resident, at least one film company is registered in Hong Kong, and at least six persons of the production crew are Hong Kong residents.

And the winners are…

It’s over! So who won between these three heavily nominated movies?

Edit: Updated with the videos of the short film “Film Dreams of the Taiwanese” and two performances. Not Lollipops though. :P

Looks Like Someone Won Something at the Golden Bell Awards

Would you rather get a kiss from Joe Cheng or win Best Television Actress at the Golden Bell Awards? Some lucky people can have both. Yes, Ariel nabbed the highly competitive prize this year against the likes of Joe Chen Qiao En(heavily favored), Rainie Yang and Angela Chang.

Kind of lazy to post the pics, but more are here
