Animated feature The Wind Guardians releases art posters

I need a 2D animated film with this aesthetic.

CGI animated feature The Wind Guardian 风语咒 recently released a series of posters and they’re so gorgeous they make the trailer pale in comparison. The film is the first animated feature film from animated wuxia series Drawing Jianghu 画江湖. It will be in theaters on July 20, 2018.

Watch Hebe Tian, Jing Boran as Beauty and the Beast

Watch Hebe Tian and Jing Boran in their rendition of the classic Beauty and the Beast theme song for the upcoming live-action film. The translations are very non-literal and almost sounds more like a translation of Sun and Moon, but at least they both look gorgeous.  Also, if you haven’t heard, Disney’s live-action Mulan is set for a Nov. 2018 release date and is expected to begin filming in April. No news on Sony’s version yet.

Big Fish and Begonia releases trailers

I think those of you interested in Chinese animation will be pleasantly surprised.

Big Fish & Begonia (previously Big Fish & Chinese Flowering Crabapple) has released trailers and is planning for a July 8th release.  This is a co-production between a Chinese (Beijing Enlight Media) and South Korean company (Studio Mir behind The Legend of Korra and The Boondocks) and seems to draw inspiration from various sources as well as Chinese texts.  The project is directed by Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun.

Zhao Wei to Direct “Huan Zhu Ge Ge” Animated Film

Zhao Wei and Ruby Lin in Huan Zhu Ge Ge

“I wonder what we’ll look like as cartoons?”

18 years after Huan Zhu Ge Ge (还珠格格) won over the hearts of viewers across China, leading actress Zhao Wei will return to the story that catapulted her to fame. Alibaba Pictures recently announced that it will release an animated film adaptation of Huan Zhu Ge Ge, with Zhao Wei taking on the role of director.

In recent years, many popular dramas have been adapted for the silver screen, causing fans to wonder if Huan Zhu Ge Ge would earn similar treatment. In 2014, news reports claimed that Alibaba Pictures had purchased the rights to adapt the novel into a film. Because of Zhao Wei’s close ties with Alibaba founder Jack Ma, it was strongly believed that she would support the project by participating in the movie in some way.

However, in the two years since, there has been little to no news regarding the rumored animated film — until now. Yesterday, Alibaba CEO Zhang Qiang unexpectedly announced that preparations for the movie would begin this year, and that the company planned to present the story as an animated film.

When the Guardians of Homes start losing their jobs in modern society, one group of gods try to wreck havoc to make themselves needed again.

Following the most successful season of Chinese animation,  the highly anticipated (by me, anyways)   Little Door Gods 小门神 released another trailer, this time with English subs!  The animated feature follows a pair of door gods looking to save their jobs as people lose their faith.  The film airs on January 1st next year, and is the first feature animation from startup Light Chaser Animation. Hopefully the story is as good as it looks and there’ll be more to come!

Monkey King: Hero’s Back a surprise hit

Mini monk. Even easier for monsters to eat.

Despite going against fan-based films Tiny Times 4 and Forever Young, the most anticipated film next week on Weibo is actually The Monkey King: Hero’s Return 西游记之大圣归来 (alternate translation:  CUG, can we give a round of applause for whoever came up with that?). The animated feature retells the classic tale with a new twist – the monk is now a child looking for a hero, and the Monkey King a ghost of his former self, having lost all his powers.   The animated feature  won tears with its MV by Kit Chan alone.

Fan Bingbing to star in China’s first Motion Capture feature

Motion-captured goddess Fan Bingbing? WANT

Fan Bingbing is the first actor confirmed for director  Guo Jingming‘s next ambitious project, a motion capture feature film of his fantasy series Legend of Ravaging Dynasties 临界·爵迹.  The series, China’s bestselling Western-styled fantasy,  focuses  on stories of cavaliers and sorcerers set in an alternate realm of four kingdoms.

Just to get a feel of the extent of his ambition, the film is scheduled for Summer 2016 already.  It will be one of five films involving either him or people from his company set to be released within the next year.   From Yang Mi to Zhang Ziyi to Shu Qi to now Fan Bingbing, Guo Jingming has some of China’s biggest   actresses covered.    Guo Jingming maybe  new to film, but he might be  China’s most prolific producer yet.

Can you count how many heads there are in the concept poster?

What happens when the traditional Door Gods gets shut out from the modern household?

Think you never want to see another winter again? Not if you’re a fan of Chinese animation. After the long-waited Big Fish was picked up for release in November 2015, another great-looking Chinese animation film, The Guardians of Doors 小门神, has announced it’ll be airing in January 2016.  The film is expected to air in 2016, trailer below, with narration by Bai Ke. It’s the first from new animation studio  Light Chaser Animation.
