Three generations of Chinese actresses.

It’s rare to get this many stars to do anything together, not to mention a photoshoot where everyone’s agent is probably fighting for a better spot, but Vogue Film has done it in conjunction with its gala this year. The photoshoots includes  some of the biggest actors, including Li Bingbing, Yang Mi, Angelababy, Liu Shishi, Tong Liya, Xin Zhilei, Tan Zhuo, Huang Xuan, Ethan Ruan, Zhou Yiwei, Zhai Tianlin, Han Dongjun, Xu Weizhou, Peng Yuchang, Bai Baihe, Jing Boran, William Chan, Ma Sichun, Janine Chang, Sun Yi, Li Meng, Qi Xi, Lan Yingying, Chen Ran, Victoria Song, Ouyang Nana, Wu Lei, Chen Feiyu, Song Zuer, Yang Le, Geng Le, Li Chun, Zhang Xueying, Zhang Zifeng, and Chen Wenqi. Musicians Zhang Bichen, Li Yundi, Zhou Bichang and models Ju Xiaowen, Xi Mengyao, Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying (Bad Genius is amazing and I highly recommend it) , and Karlie Kloss also joined in the fun.

I was able to recognized 34 of the 42 without looking at the list of names, how many can you identify?

Tong Liya back to the 90’s

Can’t tell if it’s a rundown motelor a futuralistic studio.

Tong Liya going retro, first in a 90’s shoot in  what looks like a rundown motel and then hiding her face in a garden.  Her time-bending rom-com How Long Will I Love U is currently doing great at the box office. Her upcoming drama The Patriot was released yesterday.

Photoshoot Round-up: Photographer Luo Yang

Photographer Luo Yang is one of the fastest-rising fashion photographers in the past year, a year with a lot of diverse, young photographers hitting the scene. Her photoshoot with Chun Xia was voted the best fashion magazine cover of year by fans and a panel of professionals, and imo it’s well-deserved.  Here are some of her works, including with Ma Sichun, Jiang WenliXiao Wen Ju, Zhong Chuxi, Chun Xia, Chen Feiyu, Li Meng, and Jing Tian.

The rawness captured in her photoshoots bring an unique perspective to the fashion magazine photography scene. I also love how her photoshoots subtly shows  Chinese influences without making it in-your-face.  It’s a part of what I see as a growing movement by Chinese artists to move away from the bold, explicit cultural elements like in the works of Chen Man. Another recent example is the embroidery Beauty Portraits by Leslie Zhang and Liu Zongyuan.

Zhang Xueying, River Villages of China

” I know you want to hear stories of bridges over gentle streams, narrow alleys past ancient buildings, but that’s not my home. ”    -Zhang Xueying on her hometown Yiwu

Actress Zhang Xueying, who is the best Xiamo yet in the new Summer’s Desire, did a photoshoot recently in her hometown of Yiwu.  The photoshoot is part of a  series of photos set in four river villages in the Jiangnan region  – Yiwu, Jinxi, Jinhua, and Zhouzhuang.

I was pretty impressed with her interview, which unfortunately consisted mostly of this one quote that whoever wrote the intro clearly ignored.

I know you want to hear stories of bridges over gentle streams, narrow alleys past ancient buildings, but that’s not my home. Yiwu is a very commercial city. Old markets are being torn and new markets are being built everyday. I return whenever I have the chance. Every modern amenity and fun that Beijing has to offer, so does my hometown.

Fan Bingbing, Wang Ziwen, Xin Zhilei potential murderers in The Perfect Blue

The Chinese title她杀 is She Killed, a wordplay on murder 他杀 ,  killed by a third-person , but with a female instead of a male pronoun)

355 isn’t the only film where Fan Bingbing is ready to kill. The actress finished up filming her crime thriller The Perfect Blue 她杀 this past week.  The film stars Fan Bingbing, Li Qin, Xin Zhilei, and Wang Ziwen as four women, at least three of whom are suspected of a crime committed ten years ago. Huang Xuan stars once more as the only male character in major film. The film is a loose sequel to director Cao Baoping’s acclaimed (and highly recommended by me)  The Dead End.

Who did it? All of them? None of them? Or one of them?
