A new trailer has been released for Manhunt 追捕, a remake of the 1979 Japanese film of the same name. The film stars Zhang Hanyu (Operation Mekong) as Du Qiu, an upright prosecutor who has to clear his name after being framed for a crime.
Fukuyama (Scoop!) costars as the police man in charge of arresting Du Qiu, though he soon begins to suspect that there is a darker mystery at hand. Qi Wei (Midnight Diner) plays Mayumi, a mysterious woman who assists Du Qiu while he’s on the run, while Ha Ji-won (Life Risking Romance) plays a fierce assassin known only as Ziyu.
The production team has quite the solid resume – scriptwriter James Yuen (A Moment of Romance, He’s a Woman She’s a Man, Perhaps Love) may be more well-known for his romance films, but his action movies have also received positive reviews. Fingers-crossed the same success translates to this film.
John Woo’s last outing was the disappointing two-part film The Crossing, though he has stated that Manhunt will bear a closer resemblance to The Killer, the hit action thriller that propelled him to fame in Hollywood. The trailer does look pretty slick, so hopefully the movie will garner decent reviews when it makes its world premiere at the 74th Venice International Film Festival.
Manhunt will also be shown out of competition at the Toronto International Film Festival before making its premiere in China on 16th February, 2018.
