The Assassin prepares for release

Period picture collage done right

The Assassin, directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien and starring Shu Qi, Chang Chen, Ethan Ruan, and Satoshi Tsumabuki, keeps releasing pretty pictures and I’ve been dying for it to be released.  For once, I’m glad that there’s a production that can still focus on natural elements as opposed too much CGI, man-made elements like architecture, clothing styles, huge hair, etc.  With August 27th just around the corner, I thought we should celebrate with stills… and the short film they made introducing the general story.

More stills below the cut.

I am tempted just enjoy the scenery as opposed to focusing on the two figures fighting to the death in the distance.

That’s an awfully squiggly sword you have there… would that even hold up in a real fight? O_O

Mustachioed Ethan Ruan… great.  Just what we need.

I wasn’t aware that the Chinese version of The Oregon Trail was releasing this year…

What real period baths look like… without the clouded water and flower petals…

I really appreciate how simple the hair styles are… simply because of how unrealistic fighting with a neck-breaking Chinese bun on your head would be…

Poor trees.  Don’t get blood on them.  The color will never wash out.

… and more pretty costumes… :)

Okay… the costumes are pretty but you really don’t have to stair like that…

… erm … I’m serious here… you really don’t have to stare… REALLY…
