The producers behind the series based on the third installment of the Chinese Paladin RPG series have announced what’s to be expected on the soundtrack of the game, and packaging details for the “Gold Edition DVD”, which is going to be one of the best DVD sets ever. Seriously. Also released was the ending theme, sung by Hu Ge. I am now 10 x more excited for this series than I was before.
The OST
The soundtrack will feature besides Hu Ge, since this is produced by Gold Typhoon, many of their artists including: Ronald Cheng, Kary Ng, Zhang Yunjing, Blue Bird Flying Fish, and for some reason, Go Go Club, whom we all thought was going to be perpetually inactive. Gold Typhoon promises this will be one of the best soundtracks of the year. Even though the line-up doesn’t completely wow me, I really loved both of the first Chinese Paladin’s soundtrack (the one with the songs and the one with the score) and I’m hoping this can be just as good. It will be released mid-June.
The Ending Theme as sung by Hu Ge: Forget Time
The actual MV for this song is currently being made, which features Hu Ge, with scruffy beard and wearing sunglasses standing in the middle of the road.
Also you can listen to Zhang Yunjing’s contribution to the soundtrack, below, since it’s also part of her own album. Do you not love it??? She quickly becoming one of my favorite female cpop singers.

The DVD
What is definitely awesome is the Gold Edition Limited box set below. Chinese CDs have pretty nice packaging, but unfortunately, DVDs haven’t caught up. They usually just have the box and the discs and that’s it. But CP3 is taking it up a notch by including in their box set 12 DVD discs that contain extras and behind the scenes footage, and other goodies such as a fan signed poster, character cards, and poker cards featuring production stills.
They will also have raffle tickets in which lucky people can win props from the production like costumes, or win the chance to meet Hu Ge, Yang Mi and Liu Shishi in a Chinese Paladin 3 Party held in Shanghai in mid-August. The cost will be around 200 yuan, or approximately 30 USD, with preordering available in June. I seriously hope this sells well and inspires other companies in China to do the same with their packaging. I’m definitely going to try to get one.
Included in this box set are the awesome cards (postcards? trading cards?) where all the cast have been made to look like Chinese RPG characters. Shown below from L-R are Hu Ge, Yang Mi, Liu Shishi, Wallace Huo, Tang Yan, and Jerry Huang. Hu Ge and Yang Mi look really good especially. I know Yuan Hong doesn’t have a big part in this series, but I really wish he had his own card as well so I could play “Going to Egypt” with them. XD Yes, I have no life.
You know, Hu Ge, Wallace Huo and Jerry Huang are hot and all, but it’s hard to not notice the girls…guh, all so so pretty in this series.

This one reminds me of the Chronicles of Narnia for some reason, rofl.

wow, I love the not-MV MV for the song! It’s so pretty. Love, love the tone of the scenes. Generally I prefer bright cinematography, but this manages to be more toned-down without the dreariness of it.

There is a CP2 the game, but no CP2 the drama. CP2’s plot apparently wasn’t as interesting as CP3’s plot…so they made a drama out of CP3 as a sequel.

Haha, as a veteran gamer, I’ve played The Legend of the Sword and Fairy and never took interest in the show – haven’t exactly had good experiences with live-action adaptations of games. The third one annoyed me, but that’s mostly because I obviously couldn’t understand much of the dialogue (as was true for all of them, actually), so I ended up with a bad ending. Not sure whether to check out the show… but this post makes me want to replay the games and better understand the story, haha. Maybe even help translate it or something.
Also, it sounds like they won’t be using the opening for the game… which makes me really sad, ’cause I really liked that song. And the opening for 3 in general, but hey.
Not going to lie, though, I’m not hearing what others like about Zhang Yunjing. Her voice is hoarse, and the hoarseness impedes on the force that she sings with. The first thing I thought when I heard that song was that someone should give her a cough drop… not exactly the best thing to think about a singer. However, I guess it’s a matter of taste, and some people like that kind of thing, and she does emote well.

Yeah, I think CP2 simply wasn’t suitable for tv drama adaptation. But CP4 is I think, so yay! I can’t wait for a trilogy!
@idarklight I think it looks good too. The only thing that bothers me is Wallace Huo’s lack of facial expression, which I’m now remembering kind of is characteristic of him.
@Nepheliad – Do you have the entire soundtrack? I never played the games, but I heard great things about them, and imagine that they must have great OSTs.

I wish I had the OST! They’re ones that I’ve been looking for, but never found. There are YouTube videos of the games, however, if you want to take a listen. They are great games, with really good, if sometimes rather melodramatic storylines, and very well-characterized personages (very subtle, too, unlike the mass of heavy-handed JRPGs out there). Comparatively speaking, the game is probably a lot less melodramatic than the TV adaptation, though.
CP2… I dunno, the story seems like it’d have been a decent enough choice for adaptation, because it’s more of a direct sequel (featuring Xiaoyao and Ling’er’s kid, Yiru), but I suppose 3 is more popular, especially now. I wonder how they’re going to inject the kind of sadness that CP1 had, though, ’cause as I recall, the ending to the first was very tragic, and CP3 never had the weight CP1 did…
I just realized that they cast Hu Ge for both Xiao Yao and Jing Tian. It seems kind of odd, but eh.

It’s good to know that these companies are putting more effort into their DVD offerings.
The lack of interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, director commentary, etc. makes purchasing the DVD less attractive.
Of all the DVDs that I have the only one that really had anything special was the 2003 Legend of the Condor Heroes. They had a short “making-of” special with interviews and commentary.

@ Nepheliad
According to the composer for the drama, the only music used from the original game will be a re-mixed version of this:
