Both gave thoughts on the future of Chinese cinema. Actually while John Woo talked about presenting Chinese culture with Hollywood production values, Feng Xiaogang, who doesn’t have a career in Hollywood to worry about, was far less diplomatic, and flat out said, “We don’t need a foreign market at all, and in five years, our market will be too big to be overlooked” and then gave lots of statistics for support on how China is gaining on Hollywood.

The third drama in the Condor Heroes trilogy -Dragon Saber and Heavenly Sword recently finished filming. Jin Yong is the only old guy that I fangirl over, and I would gladly pick him over any guy. With plots of Dickens, language of Fitzgerald, Jin Yong is so awesome that he has his own area of study – Jinology. Read some of his novels translated here.
This will also be Zhang Jizhong’s seventh and last Jin Yong drama, after which he will tackle the ambitious Journey to the West remake. (more…)

This is a week late, but I’ve got about half a dozen half-written articles, more I want to write but no time for, and thus nothing actually gets published, because I don’t finish writing one before starting on the next one.

Diving is known for producing hot guys, and Tian Liang’s one of the hottest (the Olympic gold medals just add to the package). After leaving the team in 2007, he’s became an actor, starring opposite An Yixuan in Nv Lang Zhi Nv and guest starring in Gillian’s Fantastic Water Babes. His next role, which he wanted to act for free, was Lei Feng, a soldier who has posthumously been molded into a myth of selflessness and kindness by the government. In spite of the petition signed by 70 of Lei Feng’s comrades against him playing the role, Tian Liang looks strikingly similar to the portrait of Lei Feng. An interview with Tian Liang below the cut, translated by dbskholic (more…)
Just let me rest bfore the netizens attack me again with their vicious verbal abuse.
Sometimes it doesn’t pay to play by the rules. Hunan TV, despite having some shameless promotion tactics, and a reputation in China for being “Shanzhai”, has had a long history of turning out good dramas, from Princess Returning Pearl to their latest Ugly Wudi. In contrast, straight-forward Shanghai-based Dragon TV has always been kind of fail with their attempts at shows. For a station situated in such a trendy city, Dragon (aka Tomato) TV has been one step behind Changsha-based Hunan-TV, and never had the knack that Hunan TV has had in actually delivering quality fun drama. It was however, the first in China to tackle adapting a manga, buying the rights for a live-action drama adaptation to the fanatically-followed manga, Prince of Tennis in 2007, with much support and enthusiasm from its writer, Takeshi Konomi who hoped this would help promote his beloved manga in the huge Chinese market.
