New Chinese Boyband A-One to debut on Happy Camp

I was going to post this later when this episode airs on 12-6, but I changed my mind. I think my first reaction upon hearing about this group when they first posted on their blog that they were going to debut on Happy Camp a couple of weeks ago, was to be appalled because I thought two were enough (I’ve given up on Seventeen). If the Chinese music scene were a person I’d shake him/her and ask her are you going out of your mind?

Fancam of their song, Insect Whirlwind. (I’ll add better the official vids to this post once this thing airs…after watching this I’m definitely tuning in because their choreography is my favorite of the boybands)

I’m going to use an economic analogy here, because a country’s entertainment is characterized by 25% innovation and 75% economic status. It’s an economic principle that developing countries, who develop later, develop at a faster rate. I think this principle can be applied here. Not only have four Chinese boybands debuted around the same time but this last one is one of those funky-membered boybands that usually don’t show up until a few years after a country has tested the waters and already had their requisite 5-member boybands for a while. But China’s already started the experimenting.

According to the early reports there are 3 + X members. Three are supposed to perform at a time, and X means that the others better work hard to get the opportunity next time. The number performing at a time in their performances has ranged quite a bit. In total there are 7 members. They at first had just three members and they just kept adding until this particular number. Each one represents a different insect, hence the “Insect Whirlwind” song and dance. Odd but ok, it did produce some cool, unique choreography.

That being said, I’ve really enjoyed some of the songs I’ve heard on their blog (I actually just left it on repeat in another browser while typing this) and they still sound like cpop despite dabbling in that dance/rnb/hiphop/rap stuff. In particular their most-ballad-type one…It was their first MV and features their 3 earliest members. But the compliments stop there. Just the fact that they have 7 members (not to mention the good songs and brilliant choreography) shows that this company is quite willing to put out some money and that they’re probably going to stick around.

Does the fact that there are now 6 boybands (including BoBo and SJ-M) in the Chinese market scare anyone else? Like to death? I think it’s good that Chinese fangirls who need idols now can spend their money on Chinese artists but I’m quite afraid because the Chinese music scene is not developed and I don’t want it to be like Korea (no offense) where the most well-known groups are boybands simply because that’s where most of the money goes. I mean, if there’s 6 now…how many are there going to be in a few years time? There’s already another one waiting to debut, but they look lame and I’m not going to worry about them.

I think the rock scene is pretty well-established in China (well, mainly Beijing) to the point where they wouldn’t be affected, but what about other artists/composers who want to go mainstream? Would this help or hurt the underground Chinese hip-hop scene that hiphop.cn has been painstakingly promoting on their website? I don’t know anymore. I can’t predict it at all, and I guess we just have to see.

I’ll add more clips of their debut to this post when they show up.

Singing 青春 (Youth) Fancam

And what is with every single Chinese boyband getting trashed by Super Junior M fans? A-ONE never said anything about Super Junior M and they’re getting insults even before they debut. Of course they’re going to try to compete with another boyband in their market! It’d be unreasonable for a boyband not to try to gain as many fans as possible!

Whoaaaa. So many boybands debuting. I guess their music industry thinks that boybands can be a fast track to success, especially when looking at the Korean music industry. But I don’t think 6 boybands is too many lol, cause sadly, I like boybands xD. I have a question though. What is Happy Camp? Is is a music show or a variety show or something else?

  2. cfensi Says:

It’s a variety show, the most popular one in China due to the hosts, especially He Jiong and Xie Na. It really is probably the best way for boybands to get known in China.

If SJ-M is in China, there’s obviously a market where they can make a decent amount of money…otherwise nobody would go through the hassle of making four Korean boys learn Chinese, etc…getting two more just for this subgroup etc. China’s no Japan but it is going to surpass (if it hasn’t already) Korea in terms of market size.

wow. this group is actually really good. i checked out the website link you gave out on this page and the first song was amazing. you should post that song on this page. the beat is so strong/heavy and unique. that one would probably be my favorite.

  4. cfensi Says:

@ anon..sorry…I don’t know how to put that song on this site. Yeah, to be honest I’ve been really quite impressed with the quality of the work that went into this group, the dancing and the songs.

Their clothing and styling kind looks lame compared to Top Combine and HIT-5 and BoBo with their cute matching outfits, but otherwise, you can see they spent time with A-ONE.

  5. Fraye Says:

The only thing I ask for is better names for the bands. :[

  6. Anonymous Says:

i saw a video of A-One “copying” the Jabbawockee’s with the whole mask dance thing. it seems like they are also trying to go with a different genre/approach.

but yeah im confused – how many members are there? sometimes i see 5, 7, 8 even.

it irks me that none of the boy bands have sung live yet, even with slow songs! i hope this changes.

agree with Fraye – i think the worst name has to be H.I.T. – 5 – sounds like a play on another boy band (H.O.T much? High Five of Teenagers)?

  7. cfensi Says:

    I think they’re 7 right now.

It’s not really the boybands’ fault that they don’t sing live. I think the variety shows that they appear on require that they lip-sync. It’s just easier for the shows. There also maybe a possiblity that the acoustics (since these are variety shows, not music showcases) etc are not good enough for live singing. But yes, it should change with the new law, but that hasn’t taken effect yet.

I think Top Combine’s Chinese name is pretty good, Zhi Shang Li He. HIT-5…yeah their name sucks. But I’d rather they look up to HOT than TVXQ.

  8. idarklight Says:

Top Combine has sang live. Not sure if they did any of their own songs, but they have all sang other people’s song live. On Happy Camp, they sang an acapella, Zhang Yuan sang a French and an English song, Ma Xueyang sang Liu Sha and a self-written song, the Korean guy sang a Korean song, and Liu Zhoucheng sang Wei Ni Xie Shi. After all, they’re Super Boys. If you want to hear them live, you can always go back to their Super Boy days videos. There’s no way they lipsynched those.

  9. idarklight Says:

no offense, but SJM fans are rude. Apparently, they stole Top Combine’s fans reserved spot during one of the award ceremonies and yelled SJ during Top Combine’s whole performance.
They should be more confident in their own idols…

  11. windowwatcher Says:

Lol, the bug concept is hilariou. I think I’ve reached my boyband loving saturation point and china is simply pumping them out too quickly for me to keep up. Also, the 3+X thing you were describing sounds weird and I don’t really understand what they are doing with that.
However, their songs are pretty good though and there’s something appealing about the pictures they posted, I dunno, they don’t look like they’re trying to hard to be cool and mysterous or something. I think they’re probably my fave of the 2034829 new chinese boybands of the moment…
Oh, and double lol @ SJM fans. Crazy ELF is like a constant of the universe or something.

  12. cfensi Says:

Hey, windowwatcher you’re back! I thought you were gone or something, away from boyband madness.

Lol, you did say China does like to do things to the extreme. The onslaught of 4 boybands and more to come is a pretty good support for that statement.

And yeah, the bug thing makes me lol a bit too. I don’t know if that’s the best way to ingratiate yourself with fangirls. One’s a caterpillar apparently…and there’s a praying mantis as well. I don’t think they’ll actually keep their 3+X thing because I can’t see how that would work well, but you never know.

  13. windowwatcher Says:

Yeah, I decided to take a break from posting on my own blog, but the pull of boybands (and blogs about boybands) is just to strong to resist lol. *sigh* I hope I never become like a crack addict or something. My will power to quit anything even for a few days is just too failz…

  14. cfensi Says:

*There, there* I know you won’t be a crack addict. Your nascar and your boybands would take up too much of your time for that to happen. Well, I guess it is the off season for Nascar.

But seriously, I’m the one who needs self-control.

How many times have I said I was going on hiatus and didn’t? That’s right, every single time!

  15. cfensi Says:

Oh…and when you say blogs about boybands…do you mean this one?

Because I think I need to do some major changes to this site if it’s now considered a “boyband blog”.

Gosh, I need to get back to American music where there’s no inter-country competitiveness.

  16. windowwatcher Says:

LoL, are you insulted I called you blog a boyband blog??? No, the majority of my blog reading is boyband blogs but I’d call your’s “commentary on current entertainment trends of modern day China” Does that sound better? Uh, do you consider my blog a boyband blog??? Think carefully before you answer lol….

Anyways, yes American music seems so much more about.. you know… about the actual music and not which fanclub stole which other fanclubs chant or balloon color or any other insanse shiz like that. *Sigh* why oh why couldn’t I have picked a more normal obsession…

  17. cfensi Says:

I’m a little hurt, yes, lol. It’s not my fault though that China’s gone all boyband crazy at once…it’ll be really interesting to see how this pans out actually.

It’s funny how a couple of months ago we kind of “met” because of an opinion that there was no other boyband competition for SJ-M. Which wasn’t true then, because there was BoBo, but now it’s just completely untrue.

Oh and your blog, I would call “a window into the world of Nascar for those too sucked into the gayness of Asian boybands to even remember that such a thing exists”.

  18. windowwatcher Says:

rotfl, i spit out my drink at that answer. thanks I guess ; )

  19. cfensi Says:

I just speak from personal experience. :D

  20. Jen Says:

Cute cute. They seem pretty alright (although, I’m pretty much sucked into Top Combine). But seriously, so many boy bands. Bobo will always be first and best. :D

Hm, I was wondering if you could do me a favor? Can you type up A-ONE’s current songs (the ones on their playlist)? Like, in Chinese (Or even pinyin/trans)? I’d love you forever. ♥ My inability to type in Chinese leaves me saddened and useless :| :| .

  21. cfensi Says:

Sorry your comment went to spam for some reason. Sure…anything for someone who puts BoBo first!

    截拳道
    牛郎织女
    分别
    青春

    in that order.

  22. Jen Says:

Thanks a bunch. (: And previously, someone asked you to put on their song on this site. Could you not do it because you don’t have it? If so, I can send it to you. Just tell me which one. (I have all four on their playlist, but I think I really like Insect Whirlwind..)

    And yes, BoBo. ♥ I adore their bff-ery. ;D

  23. cfensi Says:

Well, I actually don’t know how to put just a song in there…if you do I can, but otherwise I’m okay really.

But wow! I can’t believe you already have all the songs.

  24. asianreview Says:

    The “A-One” name for a boyband isn’t really original. Wasn’t there a British-Norwegian boyband before named “A1″?

  26. Amy Says:

OMG wow SJ fans are crazy!
My friend told me that in Korea, this Fan took a picture with one of the SJ members and post it up on the blog, and other fans got so jealous they started trashing talking her and called her names. That girl became so depressed she suicide! ( i dunno if this is real but my friend said it was on the NEWS.)

I mean.. I love SJ too. but, im not THAT crazy.
